Deborah Rhondda Tyler, of Pleasantville, New Jersey, was born on July 14, 2005, at the Virtua West Jersey Hospital in Voorhees, New Jersey. She died at the hospital later that day.
The Deborah Rhondda Tyler Memorial Scholarship honors the brief life of the daughter of Tyler Enterprises, LLC founders Mark Tyler and his wife, the former Deanna Carstarphen. Although Deborah did not live a long life, she takes her rightful place in a rich family history that can be traced all the way back to Africa.
Deborah never had an opportunity to reach her full potential. This scholarship will help Columbia Union College students reach their full potential in the pursuit of excellence.
Open to currently enrolled, full-time Columbia Union College students who exhibit strength in at least three of the five following categories:
1. Commitment to Spiritual Development
2. Attainment of Academic Excellence
3. Dedication to Community Service
4. Potential to affect Positive Change in the student's
5. Creative Expression through the Arts
A student may apply for the scholarship only once.
$1000.00 Annual Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded in mid-February and disbursed
in two parts:
Part I: $500.00 applied to the students Columbia Union College
Part II: $500.00 given to the student as an award check from
Tyler Enterprises, LLC for personal use
Applications for the 2009-2010 academic year must be postmarked on or before October 15, 2009. We will begin accepting applications on August 1, 2009.
This is not a need-based scholarship.
Applicants must provide one official copy of the most recent college transcript in a sealed envelope. (First-year students may provide one official copy of the high school transcript in a sealed envelope.)
Applicants must write a 300-500 word essay demonstrating the student's strengths and personal development in at least three of the five categories listed in the Eligibility Requirements. Essays must be typed and double-spaced. Please use a 12-point legible font such as Times New Roman or Arial.
Applicants must include one recommendation letter in each of the following categories: personal, professional and academic. The personal recommendation can be from the student's pastor, dormitory dean, athletic coach, Sabbath School teacher, etc.
The professional recommendation can be from a student's employer, mayor, City Council member or other elected official, community activist, etc.
The academic recommendation can be from a student's college professor, or high school, middle school or elementary school teacher, or tutor. Ask the writers of the letters to place them in sealed envelopes.
Applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges, including at least one Columbia Union College alumnus. The panel will check the application packets for completeness. The personal essay will weigh heavily in the decision process. Essays will be scored 1-10 (1-Lowest to 10- Highest) on the basis of content, style and grammar.
AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT AND DISBURSEMENT
The Deborah Rhondda Tyler Memorial Scholarship winner will be announced in mid-February 2010. Funds will also be disbursed in mid-February 2010 when the winner is announced. As the process nears completion, information will be available on this web page.
